Summer sunshine. A Saturday afternoon.
Cracking canal pubs. That’s the ingredients sorted for a super Young Members’ Social.
Do you want to meet other young people who appreciate great ale? Explore some of the best canal-side
pubs? And enjoy a scenic stroll between beers?
If it’s a yes, then come along to the Regional Young Members’ Social in August that starts in Leeds. We’ll be walking 3.5 miles/5.5 km along the
very pleasant Leeds-Liverpool canal visiting award winning pubs at the start, the end and en-route!
Who Are You?
I’m Warren and I’m Regional Young Members’ Co-ordinator for Yorkshire. If you’re
from Leeds you’ll know me as Membership Secretary and Volunteer Co-ordinator at the branch Beer Festival. If you’re from elsewhere, who knows, we may well have met as I like to visit other places and beer festivals. Either way it would be great
to have you along on the Social.
Did you know there are over 1000 Young Members in Yorkshire? I bet that surprised you. But, because everyone's busy and spread over a large area it can be difficult to meet up.
That's where a Regional Social comes in and gives you a chance to find out that CAMRA isn't full of the socks and sandals, beard and beer belly brigade (though beards are well in, I say as I stroke mine!)
The Day Itself
So, you’re interested in coming? Then here’s the details:
11.30 Meet at Tapped with its own microbrewery (51 Boar Lane, 3 mins from Leeds
12.11 Catch the First Leeds 33A bus from Wellington St to Kirkstall Abbey.
Soak up the atmosphere of the impressive ruins of this 12th century abbey.
1.00 Pop in to West End House (previous branch Pub of the Season).
1.30 Visit Kirkstall
Bridge Inn (branch Pub of the Year 2014 and 2015) that overlooks the canal and is the ‘tap’ for Kirkstall Brewery.
2.15 Walk along the canal to Abbey Inn (branch Community Pub of the Year) where we’ll catch up with Leeds branch
members who’ll also be enjoying the delights of the canal and its pubs.
Continue along the canal.
There are 4 pubs here with regular buses running to Leeds city centre so you can leave whenever it suits you - maybe that’ll be straight
away or maybe you’ll want to make a full day of it and visit all of the pubs.
Tempted? You’re likely though to have some queries or be a bit apprehensive about coming but these Q and As should help.
Q and As
Q. I’m not sure about coming because I don't know anyone. Will it be an issue?
A. No, of course not. I'll make sure you feel welcome and you won't be the only one especially as it for Young Members throughout God’s Own County.
Q. Can my friend come who’s not a CAMRA member?
A. Feel free to invite them so they can see what CAMRA is like and there'll be no hard sell to join, honest.
Q. I’m at the edge of the age bracket (18-30) for Young Members. Will
I feel left out?
A. No - it’s attitude not age that counts. If you’re at the bottom end of the range it might not be your typical Saturday drinking event but should be enjoyable regardless. At the other end, this email has also been
sent to members who are 31-35 because as soon as you get in your 30s doesn’t mean you suddenly stop becoming young. It’ll be great to see you irrespective of your age.
Q. How will I recognise you?
A. My picture’s on the Leeds
Q. I can’t meet you at the start. Can I join later?
A. Of course. You can meet up with us at any time - the timetable above is very realistic.
Q. Will I be OK as I’m a slow walker and not used to covering
A. You should be. It’s all flat, we’ll be going at a gentle pace and The Abbey splits the walk.
Q. You’re going to a lot of pubs. What if I don’t want a beer in every one?
A. That’s absolutely fine.
The day is not just about beer. Also, I’ll be having halves as well as non-alcoholic drinks on the way.
Q. Can I get food on the way?
A. It’s best to bring food and snacks with you as we won’t be in any of the pubs that long
though Rodley has a number of eateries.
Q. How do I get back to Leeds centre?
A. Buses 16A/670/671/760 all stop in the heart of Rodley and take 20-35 minutes. The 508 stops nearby.
Q. Will transport be expensive?
A. Not really.

all services in West Yorkshire.
b) within West Yorkshire you can get a Train and Bus Day Rover (£7.90 for one person or £11.70 for two) for unlimited
